Louise, you are performing a medical for Fitness to wear a mask over the airway.
Considerations are thus:
Any medicals conditions that could interfere with the seal of the mask:
Bone structure of face
Skin: severe acnes, seborrhoeac dermatitis or even facial hair
Any medical conditions that will be exacerbated by wearing the mask (and this does depend on the type of mask)
Canister type masks require a respiratory effort and people with obstructive airway disorders or moderate to severe restrictive disorders do not tolerate them well. Any of the skin conditions mentioned above may be exacerbated by mask wear.
Air fed masks are not tolerate well by people with dryness disorders (Sicca Syndrome, Sjogrens)
And do forget psychological aspects and the fact they may well be going into a dangerous environment ( someone with ADHD??) on their own, which would also cover looking for any disorders that can cause sudden collapse (Cardiac, IDDD, Neurological)
For me then the medical would be HISTORY, Facial skin inspection, Spirometry. Psychological assessment.
They may be fit with restrictions, so have a wider consideration as to what they may be doing whilst wearing the mask.

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] Face fit Medicals
Good evening all. I have been asked to undertake Medicals on employees prior to face fit testing. I have read the HSE guidance HSG53 and am still not clear on what is required. Could anyone offer me any further guidance in respect of what best practice is and what others are doing?
