Hi,
I have received a thorny enquiry and would appreciate some advice.
A person has contacted me claiming he loaned an object to us many decades ago and would like it returned. His description matches an object in our collections. He has no paperwork for it, nor can I find any. However, he has now found a relevant ex-member of staff to back him up that it was a loan, not a gift, conducted as a "gentleman's agreement" without paperwork.
My feeling is that we can't transfer possession of the item on these grounds, but what do you think of our legal and ethical position?
Please contact me off list on [log in to unmask]
Thanks,
Luanne
