International refugee law and refugee protection
A 5-day intensive residential course in Sanremo (Italy)
15-19 November 2016
The Arab world, in particular the Middle East, is witnessing a forced displacement crisis of unprecedented dimension. Within this context, it is urgent to develop the capacity of all stakeholders in the Arab world to respond to refugee crises in full knowledge of international standards and of good practices in the areas of:
o Identification and registration of refugees
o Admission, movement and residence
o Access to basic services and humanitarian assistance
o Respect for diversity and community participation
o Prevention of and response to violence and other threats
o Human security and national security concerns
o International solidarity and the search for durable solutions, among others.
During the five-day course in Sanremo, participants have a unique opportunity to interact not only with each other, but also with recognised experts who facilitate the various thematic sessions of the programme. Different participatory methodologies (e.g. simulations, role-play, case studies and mapping exercises) are used in order to maximize learning. Real-time evaluation prepares participants to apply their newly acquired knowledge and skills in their professional practice.
This course is suited for government officials who are involved in the formulation and application of law and policy for the benefit of refugees, returnees, internally displaced persons and other persons in need of protection. It is also useful for members of civil society organizations, scholars and researchers, parliamentarians, judges and their staff, humanitarian workers and others engaged in advocacy, relief and protection work at all levels.
Fee: 700 Euros (includes tuition, certificate, lunch buffet and refreshments, and transportation from and to Nice airport.

BACKGROUND:
The International Institute of Humanitarian Law, based in Sanremo (Italy) is an independent, non-profit organisation in the field of training and dissemination of international humanitarian law, human rights law, and the law of forced migration.
IIHL has been offering general courses on International Refugee Law and refugee protection since 1982. These courses, the contents and methodology of which are regularly updated, are available in English, French, Spanish, and Arabic. They are organized in close co-operation with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and with the support of the Swiss State Secretariat for Migration and the US State Department (Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration). The International Refugee Law Courses aim to:
• Promote law, principles and policies relating to the protection of persons in need of international protection;
• Develop a common understanding among participants on how these laws and policies can be promoted and implemented at the national level by a variety of stakeholders;
• Enhance the skills of participants in developing and applying policies and standards in conformity with international law;
• Develop a positive attitude among participants towards the protection of refugees and other displaced people.
