Dear all,
As some of you may already have noticed, since yesterday afternoon the Trismegistos website has been down.
It is with great sadness that I must inform you that our loyal server, Atlas, has breathed his last. Atlas joined our small team way back in 2008, at the start of the ‘Creating Identities in Graeco-Roman Egypt’ project. Trismegistos was on the brink of a major expansion then, as we were just starting with the extraction of names from the Duke Databank of Documentary Papyri. Needless to say, we wouldn’t have succeeded without his (in those days) immense powers. So it is thanks to him that Trismegistos People and Places, and all the additional sections produced over the past 8 years, have been broadcasted safely and swiftly to your computers all this time.
Last year, we started looking for a worthy successor in order to grant Altas a well-deserverd retirement. Over the past months, Kalypso has passed all the rigorous tests to which we have subjected her. With Atlas’ early demise, she will have to take up her heavy task more swiftly than anticipated, but we’re confident she will uphold Trismegistos in the years to come and will accompany us toward a bright future.
We are doing everything we can to get the web server up and running as soon as possible, but it is very likely you will have to take at least the weekend off. We realize this comes at a bad time, since many of you have already been on (forced) vacation, and one can only handle so much. We thank you for your patience and understanding during these dark days.
For Trismegistos,
Yanne Broux
“Oh, Atlas the Great
You carried the weight
Of Trismegistos on your shoulders
For eight long years
You boosted our careers
Hosting websites, storing data neatly in folders
A while ago
You started to run slow
And often we could here you puff and wheeze
An ingeniously complicated spreadsheet
and perhaps this week’s extreme heat
Finally forced you down on your knees
Networks of all sorts
Levenshtein and bermuda shorts
Still graced your bucket list
But now that you crashed
The IT unit will have you trashed
Oh, you will forever be missed”
