URGENT – Fully funded place for four-month research internship available immediately at the Music Computing Lab at the Open University.
A fully funded place for a four-month Visiting Research Student is immediately available at the Music Computing Lab at the Open University. You must be an EU, EEA, or UK National. Prospective research interns could be excellent final year undergraduates, Masters students, or PhD students, or could have recently completed any of these awards. You must be available to start at the beginning of Sept 2016.
We are interested in candidates with a) programming skills and b) knowledge (and ideally experience) of HCI evaluation.
Musical skills (formal or informal) would be extremely helpful. Music-related computing skills, such as Max/MSP or PD programming, would be very helpful, as would experience of prototyping with Arduino, or similar. Experience in IOS programming would be a major advantage.
The project will focus on The Haptic Bracelets, which are light, wearable, programmable, interactive, wireless bracelets with built-in sensors and vibrotactiles, typically worn on ankles (all four limbs for some applications). They are controllable by external hosts such as Macs, iPads and iPhones, which also collect data.
You will be responsible for:
(a) helping to design and build lo-fi (and ideally high fidelity) prototype systems and user interfaces,
(b) transporting, setting up and adjusting systems, with minor maintenance programming where appropriate,
(c) working with groups of users, including stroke survivors, to help organise pilot tests,
(d) helping to analyse and document pilot activities,
(e) helping with writing up and dissemination.
This research internship is available to start immediately. The studentship will run for four months. You will be based at the Open University Campus in Milton Keynes.
For more information, or for informal enquiries, contact s.holland (insert <at> here) open.ac.uk. Applications should also be sent to this address, and also copied to [log in to unmask]
Applications should include a CV with contact details and covering note that summarizes:
• evidence of appropriate knowledge, skills and experience,
• why you want to undertake this particular studentship and why you would be a good candidate,
• telephone, email and postal contact details for two referees, at least one of whom must be able to comment on subject discipline specifics.
This is an opportunity to gain experience in a Digital Health research project at the Music Computing Lab. The project will lead to a publication with the intern contributing as co-author.
