PHOTOGRAPHY AND/AS PEDAGOGY
Studentship in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities at the University of Westminster
Three years, full time
£16,000 annual stipend plus fee waiver for three years amounting to £5,000 per year
The University Archive provides ample evidence that the University and its predecessor institutions have been at the forefront of innovations in both the technologies of photography and in its pedagogical implications.
The Royal Polytechnic Institution housed the first photographic studio in Europe, and both the Royal Polytechnic Institution and the Regent Street Polytechnic led on the development of numerous photographic processes, including experiments with colour photography. At the same time, throughout the history of these institutions, staff were involved in thinking about and directing the teaching of photography.
The archive is rich with materials vital to considerations of the relation between photography and pedagogy, particularly in the following areas:
- the role of women in the dissemination of photographic practice
- the shaping of the technology of photography by pedagogy
- the shaping of the aesthetics of photography by pedagogy
- the intersections of photography, education and class
- a longitudinal study of the development of photographic pedagogical discourse
- photography and moral education
- the use of the photographic lantern in pedagogy
- the links between photography at the Regent Street Polytechnic and the Brotherhood of the Linked Ring, the Royal Photographic Society and the Royal Geographical Society
The closing date for applications is 5pm on Friday 23 September 2016.
