The University of Helsinki, founded in 1640, is one of the world’s leading universities for multidisciplinary research. The university has an international academic community of 40,000 students and staff members. The University of Helsinki offers comprehensive services to its employees, including occupational health care and health insurance, sports facilities, and opportunities for professional development. The International Staff Services office assists employees from abroad with their transition to work and life in Finland.
The Department of Chemistry (http://www.helsinki.fi/kemia/english/) at the Faculty of Science carries out research on chemistry and its applications at an international level and provides academic teaching based on high quality research. The department forms accountability unit operating on an annual budget of 19 million euros and reports 270 person-years per annum. There are 15 professors at the Department.
The research performed in the Laboratory of Physical Chemistry at the Department of Chemistry is of highest international level. The current research areas are laser spectroscopy, photochemistry, gas kinetics and computational and theoretical chemistry.
The Department of Chemistry at the University of Helsinki is searching
ONE POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCHER AND ONE GRADUATE STUDENT
for three and four-year positions starting from 1. September 2016 at the Kumpula Campus of the University of Helsinki. Starting dates are negotiable. The research will be directed by Professor Lauri Halonen. The objective is to break new grounds by approaches which combine innovative computational and experimental methods.
The successful candidates are expected to carry out experimental and/or computational/theoretical work on one of the following two topics: Atmospheric chemistry, especially processes at different forms of water including water complexes, ice particles and the quasi-liquid layer of ice; Laser spectroscopy method development with mid-infrared optical frequency combs for ice- and quartz-surfaces.
The molecular spectroscopy and theoretical chemistry group led by Prof. Halonen consists of about 15 scientists, and has excellent computational and experimental facilities including commercial and home-built optical frequency combs and a new proton transfer mass-spectrometer.
The salaries of successful candidates will be based on the university salary system, and will depend on personal skills and experience. The positions will be filled with 4-month trial periods.
