medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
My two cents: I think a conflation of the two is not alien to medieval thinking. I've been reading Martin of Braga's De castigatione rusticorum, which has the Fall of Angels as an explanation of the rise of what we would call paganism or polytheism. The fallen angels, or demons, deluded people into thinking they were gods. And Augustine, in --Ithink-- his Questiones ad Simplicianum treats the witch of Endor at length, explaining that what we have here is the work of demons, albeit demons who work by the special permission and dispensation of God, in order to perdict things that are true, in spite of their mendacious nature.

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Greetings all,
Are any of the learned ones on the list aware of texts (best of all legal texts, but IŽd accept any) that identify raising the dead with heathendom/paganism rather than (or as well as) magic? If the purpose is divination, so much the better (And IŽd be interested in legal prohibitions of divination, though I imagine these are common). The witch of Endor in the Old Testament comes immediately to mind as a biblical parallel, and I feel sure there must be a literature on her far larger than I have the opportunity to survey in detail (assuming I could get the texts in the first place!) Thanks in advance, Meg
