• Part-time (0.5FTE) fixed term for three years; remuneration: base salary $121K-$140K pro rata, plus leave loading and up to 17% superannuation; an additional clinical loading will be paid where eligible
Sydney Medical School is a faculty with 25 disciplines and over 40 associated research units, institutes, centres and foundations. In addition, it has formal links to over 50 hospitals and health care facilities across NSW. There are six metropolitan clinical schools in Sydney plus the School of Rural Health in Dubbo, and two University Departments of Rural Health, one in Broken Hill and one in Lismore.
The faculty employs more than 900 academic staff and has over 2,000 affiliates who contribute to its activities. Its educational responsibilities include some 1,200 medical students, more than 1,300 postgraduate coursework students, 240 research Master's students and 1,000 PhD students.
The Sydney Medical Program (SMP) is a graduate entry medicine course (MD) with an annual intake of approximately 300 students (220-230 domestic, 70-80 international). The SMP has undergone internal and external review in 2015 and was re-accredited to end 2022. As part of the University strategic plan, the curriculum is to be revised to fit the future needs of patients, health services and students.
The Education Office at Sydney Medical School comprises academic and professional services staff involved in curriculum development, delivery, assessment and student support in the SMP and other Postgraduate Courses. We seek to employ a Clinical Studies Advisor for the SMP-MD program with an appointment at Senior Lecturer level. You will report to the co-ordinator of clinical studies, and join an established and highly skilled teaching and research team and make a substantial contribution to the continued success of the MD program.
Key accountabilities and responsibilities include:
• working with the Co-ordinator of Clinical Studies, Co-Directors of the SMP, Clinical Schools, the Office of Medical Education and other stakeholders to ensure effective delivery of clinical studies within the Sydney Medical Program at Clinical Schools and other clinical settings
• assisting in the management of issues relating to academic progression, student support, academic integrity, conduct and discipline, particularly in clinical schools and other clinical settings, according to University policy
• supporting the Co-ordinator of Clinical Studies, Co-Directors of the Sydney Medical Program in the day to day management of the program, particularly in clinical aspects of the program
• supporting and contributing to the design, development, implementation and evaluation of new and existing content and delivery of clinical studies within the MD Program curriculum in preparation for the 2020 new curriculum
• assisting as required in overseeing the processes for consideration of short term leave and special consideration applications
• providing advice and support on queries related to clinical matters to students, faculty and clinical school staff across the program
• attending Stage 3 Examination Committee meeting, review Stage 3 Barrier exam papers and provide support and feedback to clinical school staff and students
• participating in the program as a tutor and/or lecturer, as required
• participating in relevant SMS and University committees, as required
• contributing to the Faculty’s academic and medical education research program.
To succeed in securing this role you will have:
Essential:
• registration as a medical practitioner with the Australian Health Professional Regulation Agency.
• postgraduate clinical qualifications (e.g. FRACP, FRACS, Emergency Medicine, FRACGP)
• higher degree (coursework or research) relevant to medical education / medicine
• experience in clinical teaching and curriculum development
• excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
• ability to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary team
• excellent time-management and prioritization skills.
Desirable
• experience in educational program development and delivery
• educational research experience.
