(apologies for cross posting)
As you know, the open access (OA) landscape has changed dramatically in recent years, both in terms of the funding now available in different regions around the world, and the most appropriate ways to offer support.
As an organisation, our aim is to support the scientific community and advance excellence in the chemical sciences. In this evolving OA landscape, the best way that we can support that community is to focus on developing more open access journals in which to publish high-quality research.
At Liber 2016, we shared the news that, in order to focus on this, 2017 would be the right time to bring our Gold for Gold pilot<http://www.rsc.org/journals-books-databases/librarians-information/librarians-notes/all-articles/2016/jun/g4g-scheme-ends-2017/> to an end.
I can now tell you that from its first issue in January 2017, RSC Advances will be a gold open access (OA) journal.
The change will give researchers free access to a broader scope of high-quality work and offer new, affordable open access publishing options for authors around the world.
Since its launch in 2011, we've deliberately pushed the boundaries with RSC Advances, looking for new and unique ways to make the scientific developments published in the journal accessible to the widest possible audience.
After receiving 26,582 submissions from authors in 91 countries, and publishing over 12,000 of them in 2015, it's currently the largest chemistry journal in the world.
Converting a journal of this size and quality cements our influence in open access publishing, putting us in a strong position to shape its future for the benefit of our community.
We don't want affordability to become a barrier to impactful work getting the international recognition that it deserves. With this in mind, and based on feedback from our authors, we've set our article processing charge at £750, initially discounted to £500. There will also be a number of further discounts and waivers available.

Best wishes
Emma
