Research Assistant, LODE

Vacancy reference: CW/NHM/RAL
Location: South Kensington
Employment type: Externally funded
Area of business: Science
Closing date: 25/07/2016

Role description:
The Natural History Museum is one of the world’s leading museums, internationally recognised for its dual role as a centre of excellence in scientific research and as a leader in the presentation of natural history through exhibitions, public programmes, publications and the web.

The Core Research Laboratories (CRL) Department houses state of the art analytical chemistry facilities within its Imaging and Analysis Centre (IAC) Division. The facilities are staffed by experts in analytical chemistry and geochemistry as well as other areas and provide chemical analyses for internal researchers and users, external visitors and commercial clients. The London Centre for Ore Deposits and Exploration (LODE) is a joint initiative between the NHM and Imperial College, which seeks to undertake research of the highest international quality into the mineralogy and geochemistry of ore deposits. In 2012 the LODE group secured funding from industry partners to set up a second LA-ICP-MS system at the NHM, dedicated primarily to Mineral Deposit work. Funding from industry partners has subsequently been extended/generated until 2018, with the LODE group providing reciprocal commercial analyses according to an agreed schedule to the sponsoring parties.

We are now looking for a Research Assistant who will be responsible for analysing samples within this schedule. The post holder will conduct mineral analyses by LA-ICP-MS and analytical SEM primarily, and will be responsible for a large sample throughput, and the collection, processing and collation of large datasets. You may also be involved in sample preparation where necessary.

The role often involves relatively routine analyses of a set group of minerals, but sample material is variable, the procedures are complex and data quality control under time pressure can be a significant challenge. Meticulous attention to detail is required even for routine work. New analytical challenges are regularly encountered and there are also opportunities to engage in instrument developments, prototype hardware and software testing, analytical protocol developments and the enhancement of workflow patterns. This role has varied components, and would suit anybody embarking on a career in Geochemical research or looking to gain more experience in these areas. You must have a first degree (or Masters) in Geochemistry, Earth Sciences or Analytical Chemistry (inorganic) to be considered.

Salary: £28,865 per annum plus benefits

Contract: Fixed term contract until 31 July 2018

Closing date: 9am on Monday 25 July 2016

Role competences:
BEFORE beginning your application - Please read the section below about the ‘Online Application Process’ carefully.

If you wish to be considered for this role you will need to address each of the following competences in the ‘other information’ section of your online application:

1. First degree (or Masters) in Geochemistry, Earth Sciences or Analytical Chemistry (inorganic)
2. Proven knowledge of analytical chemistry techniques
3. Proven experience in the application of one or more of the following techniques: LA-ICP-MS, analytical SEM and/or EPMA
4. Demonstrable knowledge of basic mineralogy and petrology
5. Experience of methodical data collection, treatment, handling and database management
6. Ability to plan and organise own time to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
7. Ability to communicate effectively and willingness to work within a team as well as of own initiative
8. Knowledge and experience of sample preparation of geological materials, ideally involving cutting, grinding, polishing, crushing, picking and mounting
9. Experience of contributing to laboratory based research

Online application process:
You are required to provide a response to ALL of the role competences listed above within the ‘Other Information’ section of the online application form (up to 140 words per competence). In order to demonstrate how you meet each competence fully, please provide specific examples from your achievements, knowledge, skills and/or experience.

IMPORTANT: The ‘Other Information’ section will ‘timeout’ after 35 minutes and any information not saved during this time will be lost. Please therefore prepare your answers on a separate document before transferring and saving them to your application.

Please also be aware that anything entered onto the form will not save unless text has been added to all mandatory fields.

The ‘Additional Questions’ regarding right to work in the UK and age are mandatory questions and any applications received without these answers will not be considered.

Please review your application fully before pressing ‘submit application’ as you will not be able to make any further amends after submitting, and any applications received which have not addressed ALL competences in full and/or the mandatory questions will be rejected.

Please note that CVs will not be accepted outside of the online application process or as a substitute for completion of the competences.

The attached ‘Role Specification’ provides further information on the role and how to apply.
