The Institute of Geography at the University of Cologne invites applications for one
PhD position (m/f) with the opportunity for graduation
PhD positions are with a weekly working time of 29,87 hours (75% position). The initial contract is limited for 3 years. The preferred starting date is on 15 October 2016. The salary is based on the German E13 TV-L scale if terms and conditions under collective bargaining law are fulfilled.
Job description:
This vacancy is a research position within the project „Standards 2.0. Livelihoods of Indian smallholder farmers between global and domestic value chains for organic and fair trade agri-food products”, funded by the German Research Foundation. Tasks include independent (literature) research and data handling, planning and carrying out of empirical field work (several months in rural India, some interviews in Germany), cooperating with local partners in Delhi, supervising student and field work assistants in Cologne and in India, data analysis, presentation of results at national and international conferences, and publication of results together with the project manager. Some administrative tasks related to the project will also have to be carried out. The completion of a PhD thesis on a topic closely related to the project should be aimed at. We also expect the candidate to benefit from cooperation with the Global South Study Center (GSSC) Cologne, supported by the German Excellence Initiative. The candidate will be working within the Economic Geography working group of Prof. Dr. Boris Braun. There are no teaching obligations.
Requirements:
Applicants should have a Master of Science equivalent university degree in Economic or Human Geography, or a related discipline. The successful candidate will have in-depth knowledge of theoretical and methodological approaches used in Economic Geography. Applicants should further be fluent in English; German language skills are desirable but no requirement. Experience in/on India are beneficial.
