Salary£32,280 - £36,560 p.a. inclusive of Inner London Weighting depending on performance/experience)
Full time, two-year fixed-term contract
The Barbican and Guildhall School of Music & Drama are looking for a dynamic and creative person to work with the archives of these two unique institutions. This archivist will provide internal and external users the opportunity to research the histories of the institutions, and to connect those histories not only with relevant smaller collections (e.g. of significant associated artists, ensembles, companies, etc.) but also with that of their social and cultural context of the Barbican development, the City of London, and their residents.
The post has been conceived primarily as a research position, but one with special emphasis on wider public access, and therefore part of the postholder's responsibility will be to lay the foundations of sustainable interfaces, digital and physical (the latter in collaboration with the Barbican library), for use by the public. Notably, this work will take place in the context of developing UK and international policy regarding open access to research outputs.
The successful candidate will have a doctorate in a relevant discipline as well as professional and/or research experience of handling different kinds of archive materials. Depending on the experience of the individual and the direction the project takes, some specialist training will be provided. Also provided will be a limited amount of research assistance, most likely in the form of internships. The post is for two years initially, with the possibility of renewal pending continued funding; the postholder will be supported to prepare grant applications to this purpose.
