Hi all (with the usual apologies for cross posting)
In a desperate attempt to cheer everyone up in these baffling times, I
thought list members would be interested in the following free event, which
I have been organising on behalf of the European Federation for Medicinal
Chemistry.
It's at the Museum of Science & Industry in Manchester on the evening of 30
August, and it's somewhat experimental in that it is an attempt to bolt a
genuine dialogue event onto a genuine scientific conference. As such it
promises to be an interesting evening from a public engagement point of
view, even if it falls flat in its face.
It'll be lovely to see some of you there to hear your stories, and I will
also be enormously grateful if you can publicise it to any networks that you
think might be interested. These might be patient groups or adult learning
groups, but could be anyone with an interest in medicine, really.
Any questions or comments, just let me know.

Can Science Save the Day?
Tuesday 30 August
7pm
Museum of Science & Industry in Manchester
How will you die?
Whether it's Cancer, Ebola, or just crossing the road, we all face the
roulette wheel of certain death every day. But what more can science do to
delay the inevitable?
We invite you to share your stories with top scientists, as we explore the
possibilities for medical research in the next 20 years.
We will be joined by some of the leading thinkers in the field, including:
Allan Jordan, Head of Chemistry at Cancer Research UK's Manchester
Institute.
Eric Karran, former Director of Research at Alzheimer's Research UK.
Vicky Steadman, Director of Discovery at pharmaceutical company Selcia.
Derek Lowe, author of the "In the Pipeline" blog for Science.
But most importantly, we want your experience to help us decide whether -
and how - science is going to save us.
Tickets are free. For bookings click here https://goo.gl/MVZHFC
In association with the International Symposium on Medicinal Chemistry.
Supported by the Royal Society of Chemistry.
