methods@manchester<http://www.methods.manchester.ac.uk/> and Digitial Humanities<http://www.digital-humanities.manchester.ac.uk/> at the University of Manchester are delighted to offer two bursaries (for £575 each), funded by Digital Humanities, to postgraduate students wishing to attend the next Filmmaking For Fieldwork Summer School, subject to approval on application.
The filmmaking For Fieldwork Summer School course is a practical short course for ethnographic researchers, taking place 4-14 July 2016 at Futureworks School of Media in Manchester City Centre, run by Dr Andrew Lawrence Filmmaker and Lecturer at the Granada Centre for Visual Anthropology, University of Manchester.
The course will offer basic technical instruction in documentary filmmaking and ethnographic research methods with an emphasis on the filmmaking processes rather than product. Hands-on training will be supplemented by documentary screenings as well as by a series of workshops covering topics such as:
* the role of film in ethnographic research
* legal and ethical aspects of ethnographic filmmaking
* collaborative filmmaking in which research subjects are involved in the filmmaking process
* suggested filming kits to take to the field
* crowdfunding, online promotion and digital distribution
No prior expertise is assumed and participants will be instructed in the basic techniques of filming, sound-recording and editing.
Training will be offered on digital equipment that meets UK broadcasting standards but which is also lightweight and relatively easy to operate:
* Production training will be based on kits featuring small HD camcorders and Rode NTG-1 microphones
* Editing training will given using the latest Adobe Premiere Pro CC software on dedicated Mac Pro edit suites
* All participants will receive a copy of our new F4F Digital Handbook, designed for tablets and mobile devices, with further readings on all practical aspects of the course plus links and resources
