ALPSP Seminar
New Digital Models - Challenge or Opportunity?
Tuesday 5 July 2016, London (full day seminar)
#alpspdigital
Thoughts from our Chair - Sam Herbert, Client Services Director at 67 Bricks Ltd asks ...
"Are publishers responding quickly enough or boldly enough to the changing digital environment?"
The technology environment is rapidly changing. Users' expectations are being set by the likes of Google, Amazon and Apple. Many industries have been through significant structural change that has caused turmoil for the incumbents. The publishing industry is responding to these changes, but is the change too slow? Is it far reaching enough?
As an example, I think it is interesting to compare the state of the publishing industry today and the music industry 10 years ago. There is a drive for free content, more sharing and reduced barriers to distribution. Traditional access models do not appear to support desired user behaviour. The current methods of publishing and distributing content are starting to look like a barrier to effective use of that content. Self-publishing authors looks similar to the move towards bands releasing music without a record label and SciHub and the publishing industry response to it looks a lot like Napster and other music sharing services in the music industry. The result in the music industry was that the new technology companies took a large slice of the revenue from the incumbent music companies. Are we heading for the same outcome in the publishing industry or will we exploit the opportunities inherent at a time of major change?
In this seminar, we aim to explore the drivers for change, including a detailed look at some of these drivers, options for responding to new digital models, as well as what the future might hold. I look forward to exploring with you and our excellent panel of speakers what new opportunities exist and the challenges ahead.
