Hello Folks
I have the pleasure of welcoming Ben Laws to the ECJC to talk about his current research:
The Expression and Regulation of Emotions in Prison
Ben Laws
University of Cambridge
Emotions are no longer banished to the margins of prisons research, however they still remain notably underexplored. My study has set-out to address this problem by centralizing the importance of emotions in prison: especially the way emotions are said to be expressed and regulated by prisoners. After shadowing and interviewing 25 male and 25 female prisoners across two establishments (HMP Send and HMP Ranby), this research describes the emotional world of prisoners and their various ‘affective’ strategies. The importance of different ‘emotional spaces’ in prison has also been a considerable focus of this research because it connects individuals to the possibilities and constraints of the wider environment. Ultimately, this study has implications for the ‘emotional survivability’ of our prisons, helping them to become supportive, safe and secure establishments for prisoners to live in.
