Hi Penny
I know that PCCS books http://www.pccs-books.co.uk/ have a lot of good books on mental health which all (I think) come from a critical perspective. I don't know of any in particular that do what you're looking for, but it's worth having a dig around on their website or calling - they're pretty helpful.
Hope that helps.
Best wishes

Hi Penny
There is a programme called Kidstime which is about helping children talk with parents about their mental health which is run through young carers in some parts of London, I think info on it is published by the Royal college of psychiatrists although my memory is that it isn't particularly medically focussed. I think I have some papers somewhere hidden away so happy to dig them out if you're interested. It is designed to run as a group though.
Best wishes

Thanks Lucy, yes someone had already suggested the Kidstime website and that film. I found the film very heavily medicalised, emphasising the brain and about the brain not working properly, but there did seem to be some useful discussion which highlighted factors outside of people, and also, as someone pointed out, not too much reference to diagnosis.
Best wishes
Penny
