Dear Tracy,
No experience with Nova Glucose/Ketone meter except evaluation we did a few years ago but for the last year we had 2 incidents in which ward staff have measured arterial blood ketone levels following previous measurement on the capillary one. This has produces conflicting results (100% difference), one of which from ITU and the other from A&E. They were puzzling why the patient's results were different though taken almost in less than 30 min apart. We follow the manufacturer recommendation that only fresh capillary whole blood MUST be used with the ketone measurement. Please refer to the manufacturer kit insert.
Thanks
Mansour

Subject: Arterial Blood Samples for Ketone testing?
Dear all,
ICU staff have asked if they can use arterial blood with their blood ketone meter. The Nova meter is validated for capillary and venous blood only and the DKA guidelines don't recommend the use of arterial blood. Does anyone perform ketone testing on arterial blood in their Trust or had a similar request? Any advice/ information would be appreciated. Thanks.
