Subject: AAP Special Issue Call for Papers - Road Safety Data Considerations
Dear colleagues,
There are still a couple of months left to submit your paper to the following special issue, organised in the journal Accident Analysis and Prevention. Road safety is a very important topic and of course data aspects are often a big deterrent in our efforts to improve the situation.
On behalf of the guest editors,
Costas
Call for Papers - Accident Analysis and Prevention
Title: Road Safety Data Considerations
http://www.journals.elsevier.com/accident-analysis-and-prevention/call-for-papers/call-for-papers-road-safety-data-considerations/
Description:
Road safety is currently recognized as a major global problem, and a large amount of research on safety data analysis is being aimed at it. Several innovative methods, concepts and applications are being proposed and applied, driving policy. Clearly, the success of these developments is ultimately governed by the quality of the underlying data. While data issues are relevant in all aspects of science, the very nature of road safety introduces additional complications. For example, (i) safety data availability, reliability and comparability varies considerably, (ii) safety analysis requires in addition to crash data, the respective data on risk exposure and performance indicators, which are also often less available, reliable and comparable, (iii) the multiplicity of factors affecting traffic safety makes necessary the use of more advanced analysis techniques taking into account the hierarchical nature of the safety data.
The diversity of data collection practices and regulations across jurisdictions hamper the development of seamless, detailed and reliable formal road safety data-bases. On the other hand, the availability of large amounts of publicly available data (opportunistic, crowd-sourced, international organizations databases, etc.) creates an opportunity to complement existing data-bases. Needless to say, different regions face unique challenges in road safety data collection, which makes the investigation of the model adaptations/transformation to different quality
and quantity of data of particular interest.
This Special Issue invites papers that address issues related to road safety data and methods that can be applied at all stages of data handling (collection, processing and analysis). Moreover, the presentation of applications utilizing innovative road safety data analysis is encouraged,
particularly in emerging regions (that typically lack detailed and updated crash and casualty information), focusing on methodological adaptations for tackling information scarcity, or other limitations of technology transfer.
The papers should not be limited on case-specific applications, but mainly aim to present suitable methodological or technological innovations, with strong generalization characteristics. Topics welcomed for this Special Issue include:
- Survey of tools and methodologies that have been successfully applied for data analysis
- Advances in road safety data reliability and comparability
- Crash and fatality underreporting
- Flaws and limitations in data collection, processing and analysis
- Sampling considerations for capturing and revealing latent accidents characteristics
- Adaptability/robustness of road safety techniques to different types/levels of data
- Availability of road safety-related Big-Data and methodological challenges
- Use of 'opportunistic' or crowd-sourced data in road safety analysis
- Improving road safety data quality in emerging and under-developed regions
- Facilitating the advanced accidents analysis methods transferability in developing regions
Important dates:
- Submission window will open in January 8th 2016
- Submission deadline - July 30th, 2016
- Author notification of first round of reviews - October 30th, 2016
- Author notification of second round of reviews (if needed) - February 28th, 2017
