The British Geological Survey (BGS) is the UK's premier provider of objective and authoritative geoscientific data, information and knowledge to help society to use its natural resources responsibly, manage environmental change and be resilient to environmental hazards.

This is a rare opportunity to join us and help shape our future as we expand and continue to modernise our Informatics skills to support our ambition to be a global leader of ‘Informatics in geoscience’ and remain relevant and competitive within the current IT landscape. We would like you to play a leading role in helping us build and maintain our business-critical software applications (mobile, web and desktop). You will also have the opportunity to investigate and develop novel software, data science and visualisation techniques for geoscience and spatial data. You will be highly motivated and technically competent, a good communicator who is able to work well across a range of different specialist areas, and be eager to take advantage of the many varied international opportunities that working in a leading Geological Survey provides. We are seeking professionals with minimum two to five years’ experience with the majority of the key skills listed below, but welcome applications from recent graduates or anyone else with some of the listed criteria and a willingness to learn and develop themselves. If the pen picture below describes you or where you want to be in 2-5 years’ time and you want to work for a forward-thinking environmental science institute at the forefront of global geoinformatics, then we want to hear from you.

Key Skills:

Ability to research and apply new techniques for spatial data delivery, processing and visualisation

Comfortable working in a range of operating system environments (Windows, UNIX, LINUX, Mac OS)

Knowledge of ArcGIS Server e.g. creating map services and the “ArcGIS API for javascript”

Mobile application development using Objective C for iOS, Java for Android and cross platform frameworks

Experience of data modelling and geoprocessing skills in both 2D and 3D space.

You will have at least an undergraduate degree or equivalent work experience. A background in geoscience, environmental science or similar would also be desirable. As important as your technical skills is your ability to work well in multi-disciplinary teams. It is vital that you understand the importance of delivering what the customer needs and turning concepts and ideas into reality. You must possess excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with those applying for senior positions able to coach and mentor staff. You will have good time management skills.
