Fully funded PhD Studentship
Decision Analytics for Preference Learning
Applications are invited for the above studentship commencing 1st October 2016. The Studentship is open to home/EU and international/overseas students. It will run for 3 years, and it includes:
- A fee waiver equivalent to the home/EU rate*
-Tax-free stipend of £14,296p.a. for three years
* Please note that international/overseas students will be required to find funding to cover the difference between home/EU fees.
About the project:
Today large behavioural datasets are available with information about individual choices and preferences: purchasing behaviours, online ratings, internet search and browsing etc. Modelling preferences, has been the traditional domain of Decision Analysis, in which preferences are elicited through interaction with decision makers. Recently, the emerging topic of Preference Learning has attracted considerable attention from researchers in the field of Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence. In Preference Learning field, a preference model is typically extracted from aggregate datasets containing behavioural data for multiple agents. Its focus is on fitting a model that describes the data best. This is used for predicting preferences (e.g. market analysis) or making personalised recommendations (e.g. recommender systems).
This project will consider the use of Decision Analytic methods for Preference Learning. The research will consist of two parts. The first will involve extending and/or developing suitable Decision Analytic methods (with an axiomatic basis) for Preference Learning. The second part will involve empirical investigation of the developed methods using a variety of behavioural datasets (e.g. citizens’ preferences or customer choices).
The Management Science and Operations Group is a leading research group in this Management Science in Europe and provides an exciting and dynamic environment for research in decision sciences.
