Bringing together academics from the UK and Brazil, together with a range of policy makers, community representatives and cultural practitioners, this event will examine issues of society, culture and identity in London and Rio with a particular emphasis on the post-colonial cultures of each city. Comparing and contrasting British and Brazilian contexts, it will explore questions of hybridity and transnationalism, socioeconomic inequality, public space, the relationship between state and community, and emergent tensions and opportunities. Specific themes will include popular and participatory music cultures, literature, sport, fashion, youth cultures, and the enduring significance of the local in the era of globalization.
