Dear Asimina,
Cost is a key variable in this decision. The standard range of online questionnaire platforms- e.g. Survey Monkey, wufoo, etc.- are fairly similar. And then there is a significant step up in quality (and cost) with Qualtrics: https://www.qualtrics.com. That’s the best of the online survey platforms I have encountered.
The system I am using these days is somewhere in between the two in cost. It has been developed (with my input, starting from this project: qualia.org.uk<http://qualia.org.uk>) to be more of a full-service automated solution though (well beyond an online survey platform): qualiaanalytics.org. In a similar audience research situation to this one at the National Gallery, I am using this system to enable staff to collect on site data using a short enrolment survey (about 30 seconds to 1 minute long) and then the full survey automatically goes to those same participants by email request at the end of the day. The data from the short on site survey and the longer one back at home are automatically linked, collated and analysed by the system, so the Gallery staff can just view their results without having any administration burden (e.g. sending out reminders).
Here are some of the features with this more fully automated option that can save a significant amount of administration (there is a much longer list):
· Linking data within individual. The analytics system will link the data from baseline and subsequent follow-up surveys by email and/or participant ID number. The system will be set up to ensure all data from an individual is associated with that individual in the downloadable dataset.
• Automatic email invitation generated. Visitors are sent an invitation to complete an online survey at times specified by stakeholders (e.g. intervals of one, six or twelve months).
• SMS/text message survey option. The survey can also be administered using text messages instead of email to include those who do not use email, or as a back-up option when an email request has been unsuccessful to ensure a higher response rate.
• Automatic analysis and reporting. Includes graphs showing descriptive and inferential statistics automatically and in real time. Analysis is set up in advance based on the type of survey question and response options to provide the most interesting/useful graphs, charts, tables and statistical tests for the project aims.
It also supports foreign language data collection, without any additional effort or administration. It can also be integrated with a ticket booking system to achieve full automation of the entire data collection and analysis process.

Best wishes,
Eric

Dear colleagues,
We are conducting an evaluation of the family activities at a botanic gardens and at the end of the family days we would like to ask families to complete a short electronic questionnaire. We have used surveymonkey for online questionnaires in the past but in this particular case we are looking at asking families to complete the questionnaire on a table or their mobile phones right at the end of the visit. The questionnaire doesn't necessarily need to be online but it should be electronic. Any advice on what software you would recommend would be much useful. And if you have any tips in relation to how to be administer this questionnaire would be also useful.
Thank you very much in advance,
Asimina
