My recommendation - having done a fair amount of video transcoding work
for the BBC (albeit a long time ago) would be to go for MP4 over AVI Š
Both are container file formats and the actual media inside the container
can be encoded with different codecs - and it is the choice of codec and
settings within that codec that will determine size of file and quality of
media within the file.
So the clinching point of AVI vs MP4 for me would be that, as you suggest,
AVIs are playable on fewer devices. The AVI container was developed by
Microsoft in the 90s and therefore may not play natively on some platforms.
