Hi Doug,
Avi and mp4 are just the video containers, while they might affect
which codecs and extra features are supported their direct effect on
the video size and quality is going to be limited compared to that of
the codec you use.
Avi and mp4 are also being replaced in some contexts by the new kid on
the block, mkv, which has the benefit of being open source, multiple
subtitle and audio streams but the downside of being usable in fewer
places.
However, if you're thinking of putting stuff on the web though then
mp4 is the clear winner as it has the greatest HTML5 support (along
with webm which doesn't count).
