For the web it’s MP4 with WebM and Ogg for maximum compatibility. - Codec and Compression are more important than container.

If you want to stream Video, then MP4
If you want everything, including Windows devices - MP4
If you go with AVI, you’ll need to convert to MP4 for mobile, web and anything other than Microsoft devices.
