I have been a "lurker" on the list for some time and have been fascinated by
all the high-end technology described. My problems are rather more mundane
and I wonder if anyone can give advice. I am a Trustee of a volunteer run
museum, which over the past few years has been concentrating on building a
new extension, achieving accreditation and visitor awards. I now have the
task of updating our technology to improve the way we work and present our
museum. We currently have several ageing Windows computers running various
versions of OS, an access database for the collection, 6 Mb internet access,
limited website and new media presence, and no digital description or
exhibits. There is a limited IT skill amongst the volunteers, and not
surprisingly, our budget is very low.
I am trying to produce a realistic digital strategy covering administration,
communications, collection management, and exhibit enhancement. In what
order would you tackle these and what software should we consider?
