Our aim is to bring together International and Australasian expertise in the areas of photography, the fine arts, film and media studies, fashion and design, in order to encourage novel exchanges and potential collaborations. We welcome papers from a variety of disciplinary, interdisciplinary and comparative perspectives, including the teaching of visual arts and the use of visual cultural products in teaching Italian language and culture.
Possible topics for papers include, but are not limited to:
• technologies of visual culture
• visual representations of marginalised groups
• Italy seen from elsewhere
• the impact on today's Italy of the nation's long visual history
• multidisciplinary perspectives on teaching visual arts
Submissions containing 250-300 word abstracts, with a brief bibliography (3-4 titles) and a brief author bio, are invited for 20 minute papers (in English or Italian). Please send an email with the title “An Eye on Italy Abstract Submission” to Dr Luciana d’Arcangeli [log in to unmask] and in copy to [log in to unmask] and [log in to unmask] by 30th May.
Abstracts (on work in progress as well as completed projects) should contain, in this order:
a) author(s)
b) affiliation,
c) email address
d) title of abstract
e) body of abstract,
f) bibliography (3-4 titles)
We will acknowledge the receipt of all paper proposals submitted. If you have not received a reply within two weeks of submission, please contact us in case it has gone astray.
Conference registration: $100
Postgraduate students are especially welcome. A contribution towards the costs of travel/accomodation will be available to students whose papers are accepted. Please contact Luciana d’Arcangeli for details.
We plan to organise the programme around a small number of coherent themes suitable for publication proposals to publishing houses and journals.
We would like to place on the ACIS website drafts of the papers to be presented so that participants may download and read them in advance and thus benefit from more in-depth discussion at the event. Only registered workshop participants will be able to access the drafts which will be placed on a password-protected page. Please indicate in your proposal if you would be willing to take advantage of this option, in which case you should provide the full text by 30 October 2016.
For enquiries please contact Luciana d’Arcangeli (Flinders University) [log in to unmask] or Claire Kennedy (Griffith University) [log in to unmask]
Please note that this conference will be preceded in the same venue by the symposium “Postcolonial Italy: between Assimilation and Integration” (23 November 2016). All attendees are welcome to attend the screening of Kaha Mohamed Aden’s documentary, La quarta via, on 23rd November at 6.30p.m. The screening is supported by the Dante Alighieri Society of S.A.
