Dear all,

I am pleased to share details about the following two events taking place on Thursday 26 May 2016 at St Mary's University, Twickenham.

We would be delighted to have you attend!

>>WORKSHOP<<

First meeting of the UK working group of the Cambridge Consortium for Bioethics Education

Date: Thursday 26th May 2016

Time: 2:30-4:30pm

Venue: St Mary’s University, Waldegrave Road, Strawberry Hill, Twickenham, London, TW1 4SX

This first meeting of the UK working group is designed to set out the vision of the working group, consider future ideas for cooperation and action as well as network with those involved in bioethics education from across the UK.

The Cambridge Consortium of Bioethics Education aims to foster interaction between bioethics educators for developing bioethics education and works in connection with the Cambridge University Press. Since the first meeting in Paris in 2010, the Consortium meets annually and champions bioethics education by fostering on-going discussion around the key questions: What are we doing? What goals are we trying to achieve? Where is bioethics education taking place? How well are we doing? What’s next?

The working groups have grown out of the consortium and have the aim of:

[+] Encouraging and supporting those working in bioethics education
[+] Promoting collaboration in developing bioethics education and practice in their respective countries
[+] Sharing information and developing mutual projects

[+] Furthering how bioethics is taught in universities, hospitals, and for the general public

As a guest you will have an opportunity to hear of innovative ideas being used in bioethics education and share from your own experience and practice.

Dr CHRIS WILLMOTT, Senior Lecturer in biochemistry at the University of Leicester, will be making a lead presentation on the use of multimedia in bioethics teaching.

To request an invitation please email Matt James <[log in to unmask]>

>>PUBLIC LECTURE<<

"Playing on your mind? An introduction to neuroethics"
Date: Thursday 26 May 2016
Time: 5:30pm-7:30pm
Venue: N44, St Mary's University, Twickenham

Public lecture with Dr CHRIS WILLMOTT, Senior Lecturer in Biochemistry, University of Leicester.

The event is free to attend but RSVPs are requested.

To RSVP and for further details please contact Matt James <[log in to unmask]>

Context:

This public lecture helps to mark the launch of Dr Willmott’s latest book, “Biological Determinism, Free Will and Moral Responsibility: Insights from Genetics and Neuroscience” published by Springer.

Over the last decade rapid advances have been made in imaging and manipulating the brain and how it functions. This has raised key ethical challenges, particularly in terms of the moral limits of the use of such technology. Dr. Willmott will explore these issues and help to illuminate how developments in our understanding of behavioural genetics and neuroscience might impact on notions of free will and moral responsibility with particular emphasis on neurolaw, the application of behaviour-related science to criminal law.

An experienced biochemist, Chris has a particular interest in the development of resources for teaching biological science students about ethics. He serves as a co-convenor of the Higher Education Academy Centre for Bioscience Special Interest Group in this field. He was the Editor of the Bioscience Education E-journal between 2004 and 2006, and was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship in 2005.
