Nimphidia: The Court of Fayrie. Circa 1625. Illustrated by
Nicholas Parry. Tern Press, Market Drayton. 2004, Sixteen

and printed digitally by North Shropshire Printers. Text in
Caslon on Magnani. Grey cloth spine , leaf-print pattern in brown
and tan paper over boards. One of a limited edition of 50 copies.
Nimphidia is a narrative poem (published in 1627) about fairies,
with King Oberon having many adventures when he sets off in
pursuit of his queen. Michael Drayton (1563-1631). was born at
Hartshill in Warwickshire in 1563 and as a youth became page to
Sir Henry Goodeere of Polesworth. Goodeere is to be credited for
Drayton's education. Drayton fell in love with Sir Henry's
daughter, Anne, who served as an inspiration for 'Idea'.
Drayton's career as a poet was long: from his first published
work in 1591 to his last in 1630. He died in comparative poverty,
but was buried in Westminster Abbey. He was an extremely prolific
writer, producing historical, topographical, and religious verse,
as well as odes, sonnets, and satires. His The Ballad of
Agincourt opens with the famous lines: "fayre stood the winde for
France When we our sailes advaunce ". This, Drayton's most
popular work. Nymphidia is a mock-heroic series of fairy poems,
or 'Nimphalls'1, much influenced by Shakespeare's A Midsummer
Night's Dream. Drayton died in London on December 2, 1631. He was
buried in Westminster Abbey under a monument with an epitaph by
Ben Jonson commissioned by the Countess of Dorset. [ DR - 3 ]

83 [1] pp. Number 19 of an edition of 150 numbered copies
hand-printed on Bedenk paper. *** A example of fine printing by
the most profoundly German private press of the early 20th
century. Founded in 1914 in Munich by typographer Fritz Helmut
Ehmcke, the Rupprecht Presse published over a span of 20 years
some 57 books, of which this No. 38. Drawing mainly on German
literature for his sources, Ehmcke printed in artistic form a
number of works by philosophers, and this poem composed by
pro-Reformation satirist Johann Fischart (1546 - 1590) was
typical of his choices. One of the most prominent writers of his
time, Fischart first saw his poem published in 1576, and it was
regarded as one of the most distinguished works of the last
quarter of the 16th century. As in all Rupprecht Presse
offerings, Ehmcke designed the covers, endpapers and typefaces
for this work. Text is in Ehmcke-Schwabacher, designed in 1920;
headings in Ehmcke-Fraktur, designed in 1909 and cut by noted
typographer Louis Hoell. Hoell also worked with the renowned
Bremer Presse of Munich, as did calligrapher Anna Simon, who
created the handwritten initials in red for this volume. Finely
printed with wide margins on Bedenk hand-made paper with deckled
edges. T.e. gilt. £275.00

57.	[F1259] STEVENSON, Robert Louis.,. Prayers Written at
Vailima. .., Pacific Palisades, The Melville Press, 1999, The
design of this edition from The Melville Press reflects the
beauty and simplicity of R.L.Stevenson's prayers. Catherine
Kanner began her design with linoleum cut illustrations of Mrs.
R.L. Stevenson's introduction. These images carry the reader to
the island of Vailima and up to the Stevenson home where the
prayers were read by the family and their Samoan friends. Each of
the prayers is accompanied by a picture which reflects
Stevenson's deep appreciation of his island home. The images were
printed letterpress from Ms Kanner's original cuts. The cover of
the book is brick red silk, blind stamped with a double orchid.
This orchid is repeated on the dust jacket . Thai red endpapers
with mango leaves suggest the forest floor. Bonnie Thompson
Norman of The Windowpane Press printed letterpress on handmade
Hiromi Sansui rice paper. The paper was selected for its
lightness and softness, as a prayer offered up to heaven. The
type face is Bembo. Allwyn O'Mara has French folded the
signatures, binding within each fold an inter-leaving paper to
promote opacity. The signatures were sewn with a 13th century
technique which allows the pages to fall open completely. A
ribbon is included for marking the prayers. Ms Kanner has created
a book which feels as though it might have been made on the
island; one which celebrates the power of Stevenson's prayers.
The book has been designed with a Polynesian motif, and includes
21 original linoleum cut illustrations by award winning artist
Catherine Kanner. The text was the last of Stevenson's work,
written in Samoa. The book includes an introduction by Mrs. R.L.
Stevenson on the origin of the prayers. Signed by the
illustrator. A very fine private press edition [ WB 2 2 x]

original leaves printed at St Dominic's Press. This copy contains
