Hrrmm, that's weird - if you put it in your ~/.coot-preferences folder (hidden dir - copy there from terminal) you should get a new "Custom" menu and a bunch of new key bindings the next time you launch coot.
If neither of these things appear then something has probably gone wrong. Do you get any errors in the terminal window from which you launch Coot? There should be a line "Running python script /Users/olibclarke/.coot-preferences/oli_custom.py", followed by several lines indicating various settings are being altered. Do you see error messages here?
I run Coot 0.8.3 on Mac and Ubuntu 14.04 and it is working for both right now.
