Subject: Sound System Outernational 2 Symposium - Call for Contributions
Sound System Outernational 2
in association with Echoes magazine, One Love Books and Goldsmiths Topology Research Unit.
Call for Contributions
Sound System Outernational 2 is a special event with workshops, films, speakers and sound system sessions on Saturday 2nd July, 12 noon to 2am at Goldsmiths, University of London and the Amersham Arms. Located in SE London, a historic centre of the capital’s sound system culture, Outernational 2 brings together sound system men and women, younger and older, researchers and engineers, performers and industry professionals from across the UK and Brazil, Italy and Jamaica. This event follows the success of Outernational 1 in January this year, https://storify.com/skindeepmag/skin-deep-sound-system-outernational and http://www.gold.ac.uk/calendar/?id=9461.
The unprecedented growth of sound system culture globally calls for debate and reflection if we are to make the most of its subversive and artistic potential. Sound System Outernational is a project committed to generating spaces where these discussions can take place.
We welcome participation from artists, deejays, engineers, musicians, selectors, academics, activists and anyone else who participates directly or indirectly in sound system culture.
Contributions can be creative, practical, or research-based. It may be in the form of a workshop, talk, film screening, display, or demonstration. We welcome all engaging with sound system music, culture, community, gender, technology, dance, oral histories, graphics, business, marketing etc, especially from global and intergenerational perspectives.
We especially encourage contributions around the following themes:
1. Practical and professional issues building/ maintaining/ promoting sound systems
2. Techniques in performance and technologies, analogue/ digital, mastering, dub plates
3. Politics and style: culture, gentrification, black voices, dance, graphic art
The deadline for proposals is the 10th June. Get in touch with proposals (not more than half an A4 page at this stage) or questions on [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>
