It is my great pleasure to announce both the results of the first
(2016) round of the BRAIS-De Gruyter Prize in the Study of Islam and
the Muslim World, and the call for entries for the second (2017) round
of the Prize.
1. Outcome of the First Round
The winner of the 2016 round is Dr Tom Woerner-Powell, who submitted a
thesis titled, 'Another Road to Damascus: An Integrative Approach to
'Abd al-Qadir al-Jaza'iri'. The submission was lauded by reviewers as
an excellent and exceptionally readable manuscript, which makes an
important argument and demonstrates the highest levels of scholarship.
The prize award ceremony was held on 11 April 2016 at the Third Annual
Conference of BRAIS, which took place at Senate House, University of

2. Call for Entries
The 2017 round is now open. The BRAIS-De Gruyter Prize will be awarded
to the best English-language doctoral thesis or unpublished first
monograph based on a doctoral thesis on any aspect of the academic
study of Islam and the Muslim world, past and present. Applicants can
be based in any country, and manuscripts will be assessed on the basis
of scholarly quality and originality. The award includes publication
of the winning manuscript and a prize of £1,000. The submission
deadline is 1 September 2016. Full details are available here:
