Hi All

I think Martin was referring to the blister paving used at this junction rather than the fact that the Guidance Path Surface was used. The "Guidance on the use of Tactile Paving Surfaces" illustrates the layout at a junction for Guidance Path surfaces in the UK. The blister surface works quite well but if someone encounters it before they discover the Guidance Path surface they could believe that they had come to a kerb edge. (blister paving indicates where the footway ends and the carriageway begins eg at a drop kerb) This could lead to confusion.

Attached is the correct junction configuration for the UK.

Subject: Re: Tax tiles at a local train station

Hello,

I've not seen this in any other stations in the UK. They are also very similar to ones used in Spain (2 images attached), except the tonal contrast is much better in your example Martin.

Image1 shows tactile paving on station floor leading from the entrance through the open area of the station. The paving is the same colour (grey) and tone as surrounding paving. Image 2 shows a close up example of black tactile paving placed on a light grey floor and another example of a junction where directional paving (in strips) meets at right angles. The junction is indicated by dimples similar to blister paving.

What do people think about this? I think it could be really useful for people using a long cane or who can detect tonal contrast to help them navigate through wide open areas, especially if it is a route they will be using frequently. I wonder if Scottish standards (and maybe the rest of the UK) are lagging behind other countries? I'm interested to hear other views. I know there are concerns that this may be a trip hazard because of the difference in friction. It there any research for/against that anyone knows of?

Thanks,

Claire

Hi Martin,

Where is this please?

I'll let Network Rail BEAP know, so they can investigate.

Thanks,

Brian

Hi,

These look very similar to directional tactile paving throughout Hong Kong. I will try and dig out some photos if you want?

Hi All,

It's looks like someone at my local station is either experimenting or following non uk standards?

Is this happening anywhere else?
