Title: The Lost Tribe? An empirical comparison of the EQ-5D-5L DEMQOL-U and DEMQOL-Proxy-U to assess the quality of life of frail older people in residential care following a hip fracture
Summary: In contrast to the proliferation of studies reporting upon the quality of life of older people in community based setting there is a paucity of evidence relating to the health related quality of life of older people living in residential care. Hip fractures represent a sentinel event in the life of an older person. Approximately 25-35% of older people will die within a year of incurring a fractured hip, whilst only 40% will rediscover their pre-fracture level of mobility. In addition, hip fracture patients returning into residential care from hospital often have delirium and consequently are at greater risk of accelerations in cognitive decline and dementia.
This presentation will focus upon the findings from a study, nested within a randomised control trial, to empirically compare the measurement properties of the EQ-5D-5L, DEMQOL-U and DEMQOL-Proxy-U in a population of frail older people living in residential care following a hip fracture. The study presents important insights into the health related quality of life of this under-researched population, previously evocatively described as members of the ‘lost tribe’. The implications of the study finding for further research relating to the measurement and valuation of health related quality of life in frail populations of older people living in residential care, often with significant co-morbidities, cognitive impairment and dementia, will be discussed.
A sandwich lunch will be available for all attending from 12.30pm and the presentation will start at 1.00pm. Details on how to find HERG can be viewed at http://www.brunel.ac.uk/herg/contact-us
