Dear Colleagues,
The below is not an invitation to an academic conference, but rather to a public engagement networking event for anyone working on religion in culture and the so-called post-secular turn. Interested parties should contact me and book asap, as places are limited.
Many thanks
James.
Exploring Faith(s) in ‘Post-Secular’ Societies: A Forum for Public Engagement with Religion, a one-day event, Wednesday 18 May 2016 at the University of Warwick, in the Scarman House conference facilities.
The Forum will explore the impact of the current ‘post secular’ era (including the global return to organized religion, renewed interest in esoteric spirituality, and the resurgence of fundamentalism) on culture, society, and on academic and public debates. The Forum seeks to connect academic researchers of various disciplines with students, teachers, non-academic groups, including faith-based communities and organisations, and those of no faith.
The Forum is organised by two members of staff at the University of Warwick: Dr James Hodkinson in German Studies and Dr Elisabeth Arweck in the Centre for Education Studies. Their aim is to extend the reach of debate about religion(s) in contemporary society by bringing together colleagues who have an interest in matters religious and individuals and groups whose perspectives of religion(s) is not primarily academic, taking an approach that is related to the everyday lived religion and encounter with religion. The underlying intention is that the participants have much to offer each other, but need to be brought together to explore this.
The forum will involve several keynote presentations by academics, educationalists and others on matters relating to religion in contemporary education, academic research, media, local and national government and wider society. Delegates will then be asked to participate in group- discussions focussing on themes that are of interest and relevance to them. It is hoped that the Forum will establish new working relationships and pave the way for future cross-sector projects and collaborations in a way which binds together and benefits all concerned: examples might be community projects, arts festivals, interfaith activity, and projects connecting universities, schools and colleges.
The Forum will be held at the Scarman House conference centre on the Warwick University campus. It will take place on 18 May, beginning at 10:30 am and finishing towards 3 pm. Refreshments and lunch will be provided free of charge. There will be no registration fee, and parking at Scarman is free.
Registration is essential. Please let us know, as soon as possible, whether you will be able to attend by emailing: [log in to unmask] Places are strictly limited, so a firm commitment is needed.
