Assistant Professor of Aesthetics and Culture

The School of Communication and Culture invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Aesthetics and Culture.

The assistant professorship begins on 1 October 2016 or as soon as possible thereafter.

The position
We are seeking an innovative and dedicated candidate who will contribute to a broad spectrum of Aarhus University’s core services in the areas of research, education and knowledge exchange. The successful applicant is expected to contribute actively to the academic and collegial activities at the programme Aesthetics and Culture. The successful applicant must have strong academic competences and must be willing to participate in multidisciplinary teaching and research activities with regard to the interplay of cultural, aesthetic and digital dimensions of society in a primarily contemporary perspective.

Research qualifications
Applicants must document research results at an international level which can contribute to the theory and methodology of the degree programme in Aesthetics and Culture conducted by the School of Communication and Culture.
We are looking for applicants who can document 1) strong research qualifications within the theory and analysis of culture and aesthetics in the context of cultural practices, 2) research publications on an international level within digital aesthetics and culture, and 3) a primarily contemporary perspective on cultural research fields, such as the aesthetic dimensions of everyday life dealing with for instance fashion, design, food, architecture, music, urban space, media and (digital) technology.
Applicants who can document experience in international and interdisciplinary research collaboration (in projects, networks, conferences, journals and publications) will be preferred.

Education
Applicants must be qualified to perform teaching duties in both culturally and aesthetically oriented subjects at the programme, specifically the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes in aesthetics and culture and the Bachelor’s supplementary subject in aesthetic communication. Please consult the academic regulations here: http://bachelor.au.dk/en/aestheticsandculture/ for a more detailed description of the degree programmes and individual courses. In the application, you are asked to specify and explain your qualifications to teach on the Aesthetics and Culture programme, and in so doing, we expect you to argue for your qualifications in specific courses rather than in all the courses conducted under this programme.

Applicants with experience of project-oriented, interdisciplinary and team-based teaching, and of participating in the development of new teaching modules and degree programmes, as well as outreach-related activities, will be preferred. In light of the increasingly international orientation of the programme, the assistant professorship involves teaching duties in English. If the successful applicant is not fluent in Danish, he or she will be expected within about two years to acquire sufficient fluency in Danish to perform the necessary teaching and examination duties, as well as administration and participation in the academic life in relation to the programme. The successful applicant may also have to undertake teaching duties at other departments at the School of Communication and Culture.

For more information about the position, please contact Associate Professor Birgitte Stougaard Pedersen, Head of the Department of Art History, Aesthetics & Culture and Museology, email: [log in to unmask], or Per Stounbjerg, Acting Head of the School of Communication and Culture, email:[log in to unmask]

The Aesthetics and Culture programme
is an interdisciplinary programme with the focus on art and culture in modern society in a broad sense. Based on a broad conception of aesthetics, the programme focuses on the analysis of art and aesthetic phenomena and the roles they play in culture in a contemporary but historically reflected perspective. The programme incorporates and develops theories and methodological approaches which transcend the boundaries of individual art forms and traditional research fields.

The research environment

The programme’s researchers are active in various national and international research collaborations within the programme’s central fields: theories of aesthetics and culture as well as aesthetic and cultural analysis. Current research interests include the mechanisms and consequences of aestheticization as well as questions of mediality and intermediality, audio culture, the democratic public sphere, participatory culture, and the concept of contemporaneity.
The programme’s researchers are active in various national and international research collaborations within the programme’s central fields, maintaining close ties to art and cultural life in a Danish context.
The central degree programmes offered by Aesthetics and Culture are the BA and MA in Aesthetics and Culture as well as the supplementary subject in Aesthetic Communication.

Qualification requirements
Applicants should hold a PhD or equivalent academic qualifications.

Deadline
All applications must be made online and received by:
10.05.2016
