We have at times used Lowry "A" solution (NaOH+Na2CO3) with 1% SDS (same as in our Lowry assays). Keep a few cryovials half full of it and screw the pin in so loop is submerged. But that is definitely not required if the gunk has not dried out. The nylon loops are incredibly strong (compared to alpaca hairs we used to use) and withstand a lot of physical abrasion. For loops fresh off the beamline (old-fashioned manual crystallography) we usually lay the pin on its side with the loop in a drop of water for a few minutes. If that doesn't clean it, lay the loop on a flat surface, press gently with wet finger, and pull it out. Or catch the loop gently between thumb and forefinger and pull it out a few times. Probably not suitable for high throughput, though.
