Deadline 20 May 2016.
Lancaster University's School of Computing and Communications has four Doctoral Scholarships available for exceptional UK, EU, and overseas graduates. We are keen to attract candidates to join our exciting team of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) researchers.
Awards will be made on the basis of academic excellence and potential for future achievement as demonstrated by your application and supporting references. The Scholarships provide support for PhD studies for a duration of 3 to 3.5 years and include a waiver of tuition fees (partial fee waiver for overseas students), a student maintenance grant and a training bursary.
Candidates are strongly encouraged to contact relevant academics before applying to discuss interests and potential topics. The following staff are actively seeking students in HCI:
Dr. Jason Alexander, Physical Computing and Shape-Changing Interfaces ([log in to unmask]): I am interested in recruiting students in all aspects of Physical Computing, and especially those interested in shape-changing (physically-dynamic) interfaces. Topics include prototyping non-rigid displays, examining their application domains, developing new methodologies and tools for their content creation, and the design, implementation, and evaluation of interaction techniques.
Prof. Adrian Friday ([log in to unmask]) and Dr. Mike Hazas ([log in to unmask]), Socio-Digital Sustainability: We are interested in recruiting students passionate about exploring how digital technology helps us understand and promote sustainability. Our work is informed by real world field studies, and multidisciplinary engagement (e.g. sociology, buildings research). Examples of past work include: energy demand of media & IT, cooking impacts, reducing the energy demands of domestic heating, see: http://wp.lancs.ac.uk/sds/research/
Prof. Hans Gellersen, Eye Tracking and Gaze Interaction ([log in to unmask]): I am looking for students interested in investigation of eye movement and eye tracking, and the design of interaction techniques, analysis methods and interactive applications that leverage eye gaze. We develop our research in the context of ubiquitous computing, considering eye tracking in everyday environments and on pervasive scale, with digital devices of different form and size, and for purposes from fun and games to health and assisted living.
Dr. Abhijit Karnik, Novel Display Techniques and Physical Computing ([log in to unmask]): Interested students should be willing to work in one of the following areas of interest: 3D displays (head-worn, multi-user, multi-view, varifocal, practical AR and VR; design and prototyping); physicalized and deformable displays; design, implementation and evaluation for impact on performance and usability; investigating relevant interaction techniques (gestural and haptic).
Dr Corina Sas, Designing for Embodied Interaction using Internet of Things ([log in to unmask]): I am interested in recruiting students interested in the Internet of Things and in particular wearables and tangible devices or biosensors and mobile applications for health and wellbeing. Topics include designing and evaluating inovative systems that enable an embodied interaction and exploration of lifelogging data for emotional wellbeing. Embodied interaction accounts for the holistic role of human body, movement and emotions, and how it can be captured, tracked and used to construct meaning and change our emotions for increased wellbeing.
Prof. Jon Whittle, Social Computing and Digital Health ([log in to unmask]): For students interested in digital technologies that promote social change, quantified self and personal informatics (especially novel bio-sensors for promoting health and well-being), big data and internet of things. For example projects, see www.catalystproject.org.uk, www.myliferocket.com and www.heartlink.co.uk
Applications close 20 May 2016. Full details can be found at:
