--- Post #1 ------------------------------------------

We are looking for a talented, HCI or Ubicomp researcher to contribute
to two exciting EPSRC funded projects related to the internet of things,
autonomous systems, energy and sustainability. The post-doctoral
researcher position is for 24 months, starting on the 16th of June 2016,
or as soon as possible thereafter.

Applications are invited from highly skilled and ambitious researchers
in Human-Computer Interaction and Ubiquitous Computing. You should have
a PhD (or be near its completion) or equivalent professional
qualifications and a track record of publication at international
leading venues (e.g. ACM CHI, Ubicomp, CSCW, TOCHI).

The role will involve the design, prototyping and field evaluation of
new interactive IoT technology. You will lead on, or take part in,
building software and hardware prototypes, designing, running and
analysing field trials, as well as writing up the results for academic
publication. The successful candidate will have a "T-shaped profile"
with proficiency in one of these areas, and familiarity with the other
ones. Prior experience with field trials of interactive prototypes or
products is highly desirable.

You will join an internationally renowned and multi-disciplinary team
across the University of Southampton (where you will be based), the
Mixed Reality Lab and the Horizon Research Centre at the University of
Nottingham. The team won several best paper awards at CHI and AAMAS.

The post is related to two projects:

  - The Future Everyday Interaction with the Autonomous Internet of
Things project
(http://gow.epsrc.ac.uk/NGBOViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP/N014243/1)
investigates the design of interaction mechanisms and user interfaces
for a future Autonomous Internet of Things (A-IoT). The A-IoT is a
system of interconnected devices that reaches beyond most current
incarnations of the IoT to include aspects of autonomy or automation as
a key feature. In other words, the A-IoT can proactively respond to
sensed environmental changes, effectively doing work on behalf of users,
with the promise of a more sustainable use of resources (e.g. to create
less food waste or to use less energy) or increased convenience.
  - The c-tech project
(http://gow.epsrc.ac.uk/NGBOViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP/K002589/1)
investigates innovative ways of representing and displaying energy use
in shared buildings to enable occupants to adopt more sustainable
behaviours. The project considers also energy embodied in buildings and
goods, in addition to direct electricity and gas consumption.

The work will leverage the experience and research infrastructure
accumulated by our team in this domain.

--- Post #2 ------------------------------------------

We are looking for a talented, motivated and enthusiastic individual to
join our multi-disciplinary team as a research software developer. You
will join a small team working on a variety of research projects related
to ubiquitous computing, the Internet of Things and applications related
to sustainability and energy efficiency – key societal concerns in the
UK and worldwide.

The post is principally related to the APERIO project, but there will be
opportunities to also be involved in collaboration on other ongoing
projects. APERIO aims to develop and test a low cost, non-invasive
technique to assess the impact of poor facade control on energy
performance of non-domestic buildings. We are using external cameras to
diagnose the status of a facade in terms of window opening, blind and
internal lighting usage. We are designing interactive technology to
engage the Facilities Manager, security staff as well as general
building users to change the facade state. This approach can help
address issues of (1) winter heating losses, (2) summer overheating and
(3) poor internal lighting operation.

Your key role will involve the development of software (written in
Python) to process images of building facades collected by a number of
IoT cameras, and creating an interactive system around it which is
usable by a variety of stakeholders. Therefore, prior experience with
software development in Python is an essential requirement. Familiarity
with any of the following would be an advantage: image processing /
computer vision, pattern recognition / machine learning, embedded
programming (e.g. AVR or ARM), front end development (HTML+CSS,
Javascript, d3.js), android development. A degree in Computer Science or
related discipline, or to be working towards one, would be advantageous.

The post duration is 12 months, starting on the 16th of June 2016, or as
soon as possible thereafter. Applicants interested in shorter term
contracts (e.g. as internship) will also be considered, as the post is
ideally suited for candidates currently enrolled in a PhD programme, or
undergraduate students interested in research.
