This survey is for a post-graduate research project at Robert Gordon University exploring the use of archives and special collections material in undergraduate and lifelong learning courses in the UK. For the purposes of this survey, lifelong learning is defined as education directed primarily at persons over eighteen outside of higher education degree programmes. Lifelong learning courses are usually, but not always part-time, and may or may not attract a qualification.
The remit of the research is to gather data on where and how archive and special collection material is being used on courses across disciplines, beyond the sole purpose of enhancing information literacy. The study is inclusive of physical and digital collections.
Survey participants will have the opportunity to indicate if they would be willing to participate in potential follow-up interviews to enable the creation of case examples illustrating best practices across different organisations, types of collections, and academic disciplines. Ideally, the survey will attract replies from as widely representative range of organisations and UK geographic distributions as possible that currently run or in the recent past have offered courses based on or integrating archival or special collections materials.
The deadline for survey responses has been extended to 15 April 2016. The questions are short and it should take approximately 15 to 20 minutes to complete the survey. You are not required to give organisational or personal identifiers unless you are willing to take part in a short follow-up interview to provide a case example.
Results will be freely available upon request. Hopefully, with a good response rate, these will provide an indication of current practices across the UK and insight into the potential future development of undergraduate higher education and lifelong learning courses as a form of discovery and / or outreach for archives and special collections.
Please feel free to complete more than one survey if you are involved with more than one course that meets the criteria above. And please please do share the link with any your contacts who can help show how archives and special collections are being used in undergraduate and lifelong learning courses in the UK.
Thank you in advance for giving your time!
