Jacqui
I worked with an oil company a few years ago about long working hours (over
24-hour period) and the impact on health. I attach two documents which I
found useful and then developed a short leaflet to be given out at a health
fair linked to the topic. Although it is mainly for the oil and gas
industry, there is still some good information.
Best regards
Jessica

Hi Jacqui
How refreshing that you have been asked about this. I had some input into an
organisation a few years ago, who did 12 hour shifts, which were popular
amongst staff because they had more days off. Problem is sickness absence
increased and the main factor that contributed to this was that employees
were doing 2nd jobs on their days off or doing overtime so recovery time was
compromised. So, I think it is also important to look at how staff use their
time off and whether family and other pressures diminish their quality of
sleep when working night shifts. The attached Wisetborisut paper makes this
point.
I attach a few resources that I have which discuss it from a physical and
psychological perspective. Unfortunately the research evidence on the design
of working shifts is poor as this link demonstrates
http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0020748914002727 . This
paper http://psycnet.apa.org/journals/ocp/20/1/27/ may be worth a look, if
you want it let me know as I can probably get the full paper.
Best regards
Karen

Subject: [OCC-HEALTH] Shifts/nights and health
Good evening
I'm hoping for a few replies on here as I have seen students asking for help
on this topic in the dim distant past!
I am working with a company who are looking at shift patterns and amazingly
they have asked for OH guidance on the affects of shift work on health
before they commit to shift pattern design. They are also looking at night
workers and reviewing their night worker policy to ensure it is best
practice.
I am looking to contact anyone who has looked at this as part of their
studies or anyone who has guided companies in this manner before.(or for
direction - in know a Whitehall study showed poorer health in shift workers
and that is on my "to read" 'list! )
They do need to become a 24 hour business due to expansion and are being
quite forward thinking welcoming all opinions so they can make a balanced
decision. All depts are being asked for input eg finance, production,
logistics, facilities etc.
I need to write a report on the pros and cons of each type of shift pattern
from a health perspective also with a mind in cost implication such as
increase night worker assessment costs, pre placement assessments for nights
etc. Research base is important too.
Regards
Jacqui
