As you are probably aware, we are required to confirm the right to work in the UK for all new External Examiners and the advice from UKVI is clearly stated in the employers guide to right to work checks.
In summary for all potential employees we have to: -
1. Obtain the person's original documents
2. Check them in their presence
3. Make and retain a clear copy and make a record of the date the check was undertaken. This should be a signed and dated on the photocopy or scanned version that is retained.
All of this must be done before the person commences employment with us. Most of our Examiners come from across the UK and some from Europe, making it difficult to see person/passport/visa/etc all at the same time so most of our applications are dealt with by email.
So to my questions!
1. Do any of you have any processes in place to deal with this and would you be prepared to share?
2. If you treat some or any of your Examiners as self-employed or contractors, do you carry out the same right to work checks?
Thanks in advance, I am happy to share collated responses.
