Dear Colleague,
I would very much appreciate if you could direct me to any research which refers to the value/need
to keep illicit drug use treatment separate from alcohol treatment. My own view is that there are
social ecological factors as well as the element of crime which would favour separation.
A development is about to take place here to combine residential treatments for alcohol and drugs
which have always remained separate within the public health provision but yet are combined for
treatment in the private residential care system. There are obviously huge concerns regarding
implications of combining staff, programmes, and ensuring fidelity to existing programmes.
My colleagues in the alcohol treatment sector have not been able to find any papers on the pros and
cons of combining alcohol and drug treatment.
Anything you could point me to would be most welcome.
Yours sincerely,
Marion Rackard
