Hi Peter,
You could get in touch with the 3dcoform crowd at the University of
Brighton, one of their aims is to put on a travelling exhibition that is 3d
printed in each location thereby saving the objects from travelling.
Possibly one of the largest and longest running University groups in this
area, they have been working on 3d for well over 10 years now.

The SEAHA group of which Brighton is also a partner has a 3d scanning
aspect, one of the students is working at UCL in this area, see the
Elizabeth Keats Webb on this page.

I seem to remember their mobile lab can have a 3d scanner included in the
process.

In a previous career I was involved with stereolithography, which is one of
the 3d printing processes, it's a very mature technology now (20 years) and
companies such as Protolabs can print items very cheaply if the scanned
.STL file is good to go.
