I'd just use a third party like bridgeman and/or sell them the digital file and let them deal with printing. The cost of us all reading this post is probably more than the income you'll make! You should ask King and McGraw or Customworks too, both do tons of bespoke work for museums and they'd be best placed to see if it is worth it.

I’d second what Tony has said here, seems to me that a “toe in the water” quick and cheap solution to test the theory is a much better proposition than diving in with something expensive, when the market hasn’t been proved. See also: not building your own ecommerce site but use something like Shopify until you know that there is demand. And even then, you’ll probably have a nicer time (and make more sales) using Shopify at the end of the day anyway..
But - Sarah, solutions I know of / have worked with include MemoryPrints (http://www.memoryprints.com) and Media Storehouse (http://www.mediastorehouse.com/) - also pretty sure there was someone using Photobox Pro (https://www.photobox.co.uk/content/pro-gallery)..?

..the gazillion dollar “how much do images earn?” question is pretty much guaranteed to make things all tumbleweedy on here, isn’t it..? ;-)

It’s fairly trivial to set up a local computer system with a WordPress based image browsing website and add a few plugins to ‘like images’; 'most popular images’ and ‘sign up’ for purchase and print news.
A lot easier than getting a full blown DAM with high quality printing services at least.
The costs increase when you start to specify secure touchscreen kiosks…
...and there’s the workflow overhead of creating the content of course.
But as a market research tool it’s probably beneficial to look at off the shelf software and bend it to your needs.
You could subsequently add ecommerce facilities and third party printing services with out too much pain, and content created can always be re-purposed.
I’m also interested in how museums have actually approached it and curious about what sort of revenue is generated by prints from collection images, as opposed to sale of rights to image re-use.
It’s a feature we’d consider for our own software development, so I’m being nosy!
