Re the earlier communication https://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/webadmin?A2=ind1208&L=fsl&P=133311, and this one…
I (and collaborators) have articles that created pediatric and adult templates, from 2 weeks through 89 years. The articles (Sanchez et al, 2011, 2012; Fillmore et al., 2014, Frontiers) describe the algorithm for creating such a template described by Mark in the earlier communication. Note this is often done for a “study specific” average. This iterative algorithm has been used for many of the average MRI templates that have been created from a group of individual participant MRIs.
Re relation to MNI or other template. The average can be registered to the MNI or other template, and then atlases (e.g., AAL, DTI) in the standard space can be translated to the average so that the standard templates info can be applied to participants registered to the average. Alternatively, the average itself can use subject-specific information (segmenting, atlases) to create “literature-relevant” ancillary information. We recently did this with the “LPBA” and “Hammers” atlas for infants (Fillmore et al, 2015, Dev Neuro).
We have described our “neurodevelopmental MRI database” in Richards et al, 2015 (Neuroimage) and Richards & Xie, 2015 (ACDB), and offer our templates (average MRI templates, segmenting priors, atlases, EEG electrode placements and head models) online, see http://jerlab.psych.sc.edu/NeurodevelopmentalMRIDatabase/
