Dear Group,
A friend of mine – a Pakistani refugee rights activist – is working on writing a graphic novel, a work of non-fiction based on her experiences growing up in Pakistan. The narrative is a magical realist exploration of the last three decades of Pakistani history. The personal and the political intertwine as the changing social landscape of Pakistan serves as the backdrop to a tale of friendship and betrayal. Critically, it reflects on cultures of procedural informality in the admittance and integration of refugees in Pakistan, and the socio-political conditions that in turn drive people to seek employment, opportunities, or asylum elsewhere.
For the project she is trying to connect with graphic novel illustrators, preferably Pakistani or with an intimate knowledge of the country, who might be interested in collaborating together on this graphic novel. Having cultivated a deep interest in how journalism comic books and graphic non-fiction (think Joe Sacco, Marjane Satrapi, and Art Spiegelmann) can communicate multiple subjectivities and entangled experiences of revelation and trauma, she is looking for an illustrator/artist as passionate about the project as she is and with a slightly experimental verve.
Reply to me and I can put you in touch with further information (synopsis, etc)
Thanks,
Dr. Barbara Harrell-Bond
