Dear all,
This message concerns the recruitment of a lawyer (or at least someone who thoroughly knows refugee law) to act – when requested - as a Resource Person (an unpaid position) to advise and help lawyers/paralegals who are representing FGM/C refugee cases before governments, courts, or UNHCR (in those countries where it is the decision-maker). (See our ‘Special Issues’ pages on Female Genital Mutilation: Grounds for Seeking asylum: http://www.refugeelegalaidinformation.org/female-genital-mutilation-grounds-seeking-asylum )
The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:
- Expertise in refugee law;
- Availability to assist lawyers to frame refugees’ law cases;
- Experience in FGM/C asylum cases;
- Availability to take charge of the FGM/C webpages* (that will be improved and updated by interns)
If you think you might be such a person or know somebody who might be the right candidate, please contact us! (email: [log in to unmask] )
We also continue to look for Country of origin experts on each country where FGM/C is practised.
Further, we would be very happy to receive your suggestions and criticisms to improve our FGM/C pages.

*Now the pages on Female Genital Mutilation: Grounds for Seeking asylum are worked out by myself and Maja G., interns at the Rights in Exile Programme. These pages provide basic information on the practice of FGM/C and links to useful reports and other resources on the web, as well as to interesting videos.
At the bottom of the main page, there is a list of 41 countries that redirects the user to contacts that might be useful for both lawyers and refugees. Refugees need assistance that NGOs may able to offer within the country of origin, as well as legal assistance in countries of asylum.
For this reason, each country page aims to include contacts of Anti-FGM NGOs or lawyers specialised in immigration law. The FGM/C country pages also provide contacts of Country of Origin Information (COI) experts who can help lawyers frame asylum claims based on a fear of FGM/C by reconstruct the socio-cultural context of FGM/C in countries of origin where it is practiced.
